It would be hard to argue against the fact that Resident Evil 2 Remake was one of the most definitive gaming experiences of 2019. The game was nominated for and won multiple awards, justified the legacy of the legendary survival-horror series and even outsold the original Resident Evil 2 (1998)! The long-term Japanese developer and publisher company Capcom have set themselves a high bar with the Resident Evil 2 2019, but the owners of the franchise are determined to meet and surpass the expectations of the fans with the latest release of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake. How will the latest RE title compare gameplay-wise both to 1999 original and the masterpiece from the last year?

What has changed with RE3 remake?

One of the reasons the third installment in the Resident Evil series was so significant is that it concluded the Resident Evil trilogy of the original PlayStation console. It may come as a surprise that the game managed to meet the standard set by its predecessors, considering that the project started out as a spin-off to the mainline, numbered Resident Evil games. At the time it was developed by a small, inexperienced team led by Kazuhiro Aoyama and written by a person who had little knowledge of the series.

Compared to the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake will also have surprises of its own. On one hand, it will be familiar to the RE2 Remake in multiple ways – the game will also run on RE Engine, first implanted in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) and it will present the action from the over-the-shoulder third-person perspective instead of the fixed camera angles of RE3 PS1.

Capcom also decided to remove certain single-player campaign choices that originally determined different endings of the game. Instead, the developers seek to tell a more consistent and cohesive story about Jill Valentine’s and Carlos Oliveira’s escape from Raccoon City. Regarding these characters of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake, long-time fans of the series will see changes in their appearance. Jill Valentine, for example, wears more practical clothing instead of having a skirt as she did in RE3 1999. However, Jill Valentine still remains very much recognizable as her haircut, as well as the color pallet of her clothing, stay faithful to the classic design.

Resident Evil: original vs remake

Unlike in last year’s RE2 Remake, which featured student Claire Redfield and the rookie police officer Leon Kennedy as main characters, the protagonist of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake is a highly trained S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) operative under RCPD as well as the co-protagonist of the very first Resident Evil. All in all, this means that the game will feature a lot more combat: the weapon arsenal is broader, there are more ammunition types and more enemies on-screen at once.

The way Jill Valentine moves in the game is also different compared to Claire Redfield or Leon Kennedy. Not only can she sprint – but she can also perform a special dodge move that allows her to avoid incoming attacks by jumping in various directions. If timed perfectly, this quickstep move triggers a slow-motion effect, giving Jill Valentine and opportunity to counterattack zombies with a precise headshot.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake is also more suitable for combat gameplay because of the setting itself – the Raccoon City. While this is no GTA, the environments of RE3 are a lot wider and more open, making them suitable for gunfights. Jill will explore streets of the devastated city, just as she did in 1999 – shops with neon billboards and all-around raging fires will light the dark streets, creating a distinct, urbanistic atmosphere. Action will not be limited to interior spaces like in RE2, but it will, nevertheless, save the claustrophobic tension characteristic to Resident Evil series, by forcing the player to navigate through tight streets or Raccoon City sewers.

Is nemesis stronger than Mr. X?

As Resident Evil 2019 presented Mr. X, the Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake will introduce the iconic villain called Nemesis. Last year, the relentless bioorganic weapon Mr. X stole the show in Resident Evil 2, even becoming a popular internet meme often associated with popular rap 2003 song by DMX – “X Gon’ Give It To Ya”. Now the Twitch streamers will have another nightmarish abomination to worry about – Nemesis. And make no mistake, the very first encounter with nemesis will immediately prove of his supremacy.

Umbrella corporation – the villains responsible for the release of the t-Virus zombie infection – unleashed Mr. X upon Claire and Leon because they were not that big of a threat compared to the protagonist of the Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake. To hunt down S.T.A.R.S. operative Jill Valentine, they dispatch a much more devastating force. In RE2 Mr. X could merely walk towards the player, but Nemesis will be able to charge Jill Valentine like a rhino by sprinting, grab her from a distance with tentacles, jump in front of her to block exit points, and even use heavy weapons like a bazooka or a flamethrower. And just like Mr. X from Resident Evil 2 (2019), he can’t be killed – only stopped temporarily.

What is Resident Evil: Resistance?

With every new introduction to the Resident Evil series, Capcom continues to experiment with different game design ideas. In the case of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake it’s the new asymmetrical multiplayer mode called Resident Evil Resistance. This addon will be almost as elaborate as the base Resident Evil 3, featuring 4 characters fighting for their lives against an evil Mastermind.

This means that one of the players will set traps, monsters and manipulate the game environment to eliminate 4 other players who assume the role of survivors. It’s a horror game experience that will be very reminiscent of Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th: The Game to anyone who got to enjoy these asymmetrical multiplayer titles in the past.
