Nintendo shared a surprise. In an unexpected bit of news, Nintendo released a trailer for their new Paper Mario game – Paper Mario: The Origami King. The game will be released this summer, on July 17, and will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

Here’s the trailer:

If you’ve never heard about Paper Mario, you should know that it’s an old video game series that began back in 2001 with an original Paper Mario game released for Nintendo 64 console. Paper Mario games were released for Game Cube, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, and now its Nintendo Switch’s turn.

According to the announcement, Paper Mario: The Origami King will tell a new story where the main villain role won’t be dedicated to Bowser. Instead, Mario will have to team up with his arch-nemesis in order to save the Mushroom Kingdom from King Olly.

Here’s an official description:

“The kingdom has been ravaged by an origami menace! Join Mario and his new partner, Olivia, as they team up with unlikely allies like Bowser and the Toads to battle evil Folded Soldiers.

Try to free Princess Peach’s castle from the clutches of King Olly in this comedy-filled adventure, only on the Nintendo Switch system.”

Paper Mario: The Origami King will feature a new combat system that combines puzzle-solving with turn-based combat. Your Mario will have a new power called 1000-Fold Arms that will allow players to figure out ways to interact with the game’s landscape – stretch it, pull it, fold it, and so on. These actions will help you to reveal new locations and figure out smart ways to defeat your enemies.
