January games (2020)

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (January 7th, 2020)

Monster Hunter World: Iceborn is a massive DLC expansion to one of the most popular and beloved Capcom adventure games – Monster Hunter: World. Just as the title implies, the series revolves around the hunting of fantasy creatures. Every encounter is comparable to a boss battle, and players use the materials of slain monsters to make better gear and continue this addictive process. Even though Iceborne DLC is already available on consoles, but we will finally get to see its release on PC the upcoming January of 2020. The amount of content in this expansion almost rivals the base game as the DLC transports the player to a winter-themed land of Hoarfrost Reach.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot (January 17th, 2020)

Among the most awaited 2020 game releases is a title that could be easily considered a true dream game for all DBZ fans. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will have not only 3D arena fighter combat mechanics from the DBZ: Xenoverse series but also open-world RPG elements too. The game will provide players with the option of choosing your favorite DBZ character and get through the entire storyline of Dragon Ball Z anime & manga! The traditional story will also be expanded with various world-building side-quests. Even the creator of DBZ himself – Akira Toriyama – has confirmed the canonical validity of these new stories. It’s an exciting time to be a DBZ fan, indeed!

Warcraft 3: Reforged (January 28th, 2020)

By the end of January, we should see the launch of a remastered real-time strategy classic. Warcraft 3: Reforged will mostly be a graphical upgrade of an influential RTS game from 2002 – Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos. Just like the original, Warcraft 3: Reforged is developed by Blizzard Entertainment. One of the primary goals of the developer is to stay faithful to the original while trying to bring something refreshing for modern audiences. It should be noted that Warcraft 3: Reforged will share a multiplayer mode compatible with the original game as well as full-on support of the modding community through toolsets.

February games (2020)

Darksiders Genesis (February 14th, 2020)

Even though Darksiders Genesis is already available on PC, owners of consoles (Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PS4) will only get to enjoy the game on February 14. Nevertheless, their patience will be rewarded. The developer Airship Syndicate introduces something new to the series with every Darksiders game release and Darksiders Genesis is no exception. This time around the game will be an isometric hack n’ slash action-adventure title with a strong focus on co-op. Apocalyptic horseman War will see the return to the series, but the main protagonist of Genesis will be his gun-wielding brother Strife.  If you won’t have a Valentine by February 14, then spend time-fighting the apocalypse on Darksiders Genesis! For a more in-depth look, don’t forget to check out our previous blog entry about the game.

Bayonetta and Vanquish Anniversary Bundle (February 18th, 2020)

The fan-beloved action titles from Platinum Games (creators of NieR: Automata and Astral Chain for Nintendo Switch) will be revitalized and remastered for Xbox One X and PlayStation 4. These games have developed a cult following over the years, and the fans have been hoping for a long time to hear something new about the titles from the developers. Now their prayers have finally been heard! Both the revolutionary sci-fi third-person shooter Vanquish as well as the hack n’ slash third-person action game Bayonetta which features an attractive witch of the same name, will come back in 2020 polished and upgraded like never before!

One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows (February 28th, 2020)

Fans of anime video games will also rejoice in 2020 with the release of One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows. The anime series based on the story of amateur mangaka nicknamed “One” caught everyone off guard in 2015 with its unconventional premise and a healthy dose of humor. One might ask: how can a game about an omnipotent character be fun? The overpowered Saitama, after all, faces the same existential boredom as no one is strong enough to give him a challenging an exciting fight. Developers Spike Chunsoft overcame this problem. The players will control side characters who fight extremely strong enemies while trying to survive long enough for Saitama to come and save them. Without a doubt, it will be an unconventional fighting game.

March games (2020)

Final Fantasy VII Remake (March 3rd, 2020)

The original Final Fantasy VII first released in 1997 is probably the most admired game of the multiple decades-spanning Square Enix JRPG series. Fans have been asking for a remake for years and finally, Square Enix will deliver this spring. Final Fantasy VII Remake will make a return at the beginning of March 2020. The game is a complete remake – it will feature completely upgraded graphics, motion-capture-based cinematics and its combat system will mix both action game and turn-based fighting mechanics. It should also be noted that the director of 1997 classic – Yoshinori Kitase – is working on the new Remake as well and this time around the game will be divided into several different games based on distinct levels, due to the sheer scale of the whole project.

Watch Dogs: Legion (March 3rd, 2020 )

Coming from Ubisoft, Watch Dogs: Legion will be the third installment in Watch Dogs franchise. This time around the game brings players to a near-future in-game representation of open-world London. Watch Dogs: Legion will also serve as a political commentary that explores cyberpunk themes of hacktivism, consequences of Brexit, collapse of government and establishment of an authoritarian plutocracy. Watch Dogs: Legion is exceptional among 2020 games as it will have no specific protagonists. You’ll represent a resistance movement and will be able to play as any randomly generated character you meet and switch between them like in GTA V. On top of that, these characters can die permanently like in XCOM games, so the stakes are always serious.

Doom: Eternal (March 20th, 2020)

2016 remake of first-person shooter classic 1993 Doom, was massively successful on all platforms (PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch), therefore a sequel was simply unavoidable. In turn, March 20 (2020) will see the release of Doom: Eternal. The Doom Slayer has defeated the forces of hell on planet Mars, however, his battle is not yet over. Now the demonic invasion has reached Earth. Demons are causing absolute mayhem on humanity’s homeworld, but they still tremble before the nameless Doom guy. The FPS will see the return of excessively violent glory kills, brutal chainsaw executions, huge amounts of action and all other kinds of fun. On March 20, we will finally be able to once again “rip and tear until it is done!”.

Half-life: Alyx (no specific release date yet)

Doom is not the only 90s video game series that is going to return on 2020. After years of speculation and waiting, the Half-life franchise will finally see the release of a new installment sometime before March 31. While it’s not exactly Half-life 3, Half-life: Alyx is still an ambitious FPS game that aims to be the first true VR killer-title that would make way for other pioneers of the platform. What Half-life games from Valve share in common, is the tendency to always push the boundaries of technical achievement and storytelling, therefore it’s not a surprise that the latest title makes a return as a VR exclusive FPS.

April games (2020)

Resident Evil 3 Remake (April 3rd, 2020)

Last year’s Resident Evil 2 remake was an unquestionable success, therefore its not surprising that Capcom is working on the remake of Resident Evil 3. Classic characters of the infamous survival-horror series will yet again be making returns in 2020. This time around we’ll see the comeback of a fan-beloved female protagonist of Resident Evil 3 – Jill Vallentine. While Resident Evil 2 Remake had a stronger focus on the survival gameplay and environmental puzzles, RE3 Remake is making aims to be more action-oriented and play more like a traditional third-person shooter. Along with the game, there will be a 4 v 1 multiplayer released (Resident Evil: Resistance), with one of the players assuming the role of a monster-controlling Mastermind.

Cyberpunk 2077 (April 16th, 2020)

It’s not an overstatement to suggest that Cyberpunk 2077 is probably the most awaited game release of 2020 (launches this spring, on April 16) as well as a most likely candidate for The Game of the Year title. CD Projekt Red   – the Polish developer behind the Witcher series – will bring us the ultimate cyberpunk-themed RPG. The player will assume the role of a customizable mercenary named, V who’s seeking a microchip that provides immortality. The game will take place on a dystopian open-world Night City – a place full of danger and opportunity. It’s impossible to give proper credit to this massive game with only a few sentences. Feel free to check out our past blog entry about Cyberpunk 2077 where we cover this game in much more detail.

Minecraft Dungeons (no specific release date yet)

Developed by Mojang and published by Xbox Games Studios, Minecraft Dungeons will release sometime this spring of 2020. It will be an unconventional expansion of the long-standing Minecraft universe as it will not feature the mechanics of crafting, building or the capacity to dismantle blocks which are the usual features of different iterations of this game. Instead, it will be a dungeon crawler where the player will need to face monsters in randomly generated underground labyrinths. While no possible release dates have been revealed as of yet, it is still clear that with the 2020 title, Mojang and Xbox Games Studios is going to take the Minecraft franchise toward more of an adventure game genre approach to the series. Expect monsters, weapons, action and an epic tale about herohood. Aside from Microsoft’s platforms, the game will also be available on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

Gears Tactics (April 28th, 2020)

Minecraft Dungeons is not the only game for 2020 that Xbox Games Studios has in store. Another famous franchise of the Microsoft’s console will see the release of its new installment during the spring of 2020. That franchise is, of course, Gears of War. What’s surprising about the latest Gears game is that it’s not a third-person shooter. Instead, it will be an intense turn-based strategy game very much akin to XCOM or Phoenix Point. Story-wise the game will be a prequel to the series, as it is set 12 years before the original Gears of War. Protagonist Gabe Diaz will lead a custom squad of human soldiers against Ukkon – the mastermind commanding the Locust Hord army of monsters.

Trials of Mana

Final Fantasy VII is not the only JRPG from the 90’s that’s making a return in 2020. The name Seiken Densetsu 3 is now transforming into Trials of Mana. This SNES exclusive roleplaying game that first launched back in 1995 and for a long time it was not available for western gamers. This is going to change in the upcoming April. Developers from studio Square have updated this anime-themed JRPG adventure in various ways, most important of which is a graphical uplift from 2D to 3D. Players will get to choose between 6 distinct protagonists for their playthroughs in each of these decisions will affect the story in a different way. As for the plot of the game: heroes of the storyline will face off against the resurrected ancient deities of destruction called Benevodons. It’s game that’s rich in lore and fantasy world-building – definitely something to keep in mind for gamers who prioritize good story and enjoy and anime aesthetic.

May games (2020)

Marvel’s Avengers (May 15th, 2020)

The upcoming Avengers game from publishers Square Enix and developers Crystal Dynamics is not your standard-issue movie licensed game. This third-person action-adventure title features a completely original story. Marvel’s Avengers is set 5 years after the legendary team of superheroes disbands as they are blamed for a catastrophic incident in San Francisco which leaves half the city destroyed. Superheroes get outlawed and security of the world now depends on an authoritarian organization designated as A.I.M. It’s up to young heroine Kamala Khan to reassemble the team and fight the new threat. The game will allow you to play as your favorite Avenger and play through the campaign missions in a non-linear fashion.

The Last of Us II (May 29th, 2020)

Just before the summer, we can expect to see the release of The Last of Us II – the long-awaited sequel to the PlayStation exclusive survival-horror game from the developer Naughty Dog. The game will take place five years after the events of the original. The protagonist of the first game – Joel – will be featured in the latest installment from Naughty Dog, but this time around the main character will be the 19-year-old Ellie. The Last of Us II will follow Ellie’s revenge story as she is determined to destroy a mysterious cult that killed her girlfriend. Once again, the main characters will travel throughout the post-apocalyptic USA, facing not only the hostile survivors of the Cordyceps outbreak but also those affected by it.

2020 games with currently unspecified release dates

Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)

There will be many games in 2020 that will feature amazing graphics but probably nothing will match Microsoft Flight Simulator, at least graphics-wise. The game is nearly photorealistic to the point that it will give you the creeps that we might actually be living in the Matrix already. It’s no wonder the game is so accurate to real life as the locations you’ll get to fly above in this simulator are based on the entire two petabytes worth of data pulled from satellite imagery in real-time. Not to mention all the planes recreated to the smallest detail. Don’t be surprised if you’ll be able to actually fly an airplane after trying this flight simulator.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection (2020)

Throughout 2020, the legendary Xbox first-person shooter franchise will continue making its way from consoles to PC. Steam gamers already saw the recent, successful launch of Halo: Reach back on December 3rd of 2019, but the subsequent installments of the Master Chief’s story are yet to arrive on personal computers. The next Halo MCC PC that’s going to release on Steam will be the 343 industries anniversary remaster of the very first Halo game – Halo: Combat Evolved. To learn more about the upcoming space opera sci-fi FPS epic, check out our detailed look at games included in the future Halo MCC PC releases.

Halo: Infinite (2020)

Sometime around November of 2020, 343 industries should be done with the entire Halo: The Master Chief Collection PC port. All of the upcoming Halo MCC games have been released at least on the Xbox platform in the past, but Halo: Infinite will be the first original Halo game to be released since 2015 Halo: 5 Guardians for the Xbox One. The developers are saying that the future Halo game will serve as a “spiritual reboot” to the series. It will acknowledge and continue the story of previous video games, but at the same time, it will open up a new chapter in the story of Halo completely suitable for the newcomers to the series. As of yet, neither Xbox nor PC games’ release date has been announced but Infinite should arrive by the holiday of 2020.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Quarantine (2020)

Watch Dogs: Legion is not the only game Ubisoft has in store for us in 2020. The upcoming Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Quarantine will be like a mixture between the successful Rainbow Six: Siege and the zombie genre as the game title implies. In other words, Quarantine might share a lot of similarities with Rainbow Six Siege Outbreak DLC. The trailers even reveal the return of Rainbow Six Operators like Ela and Vigil. As for the gameplay, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Quarantine is said to be a tactical 3 player co-op with survival horror elements common to zombie video games. Various gadgets that were available might also make a return, but overall the game should also be welcoming to newcomers.

Kerbal Space Program 2 (2020)

Kerbal Space Program – the humorous space exploration simulator should finally get a sequel in 2020. Kerbal Space Program 2 will once again feature the little green men – Kerbals – and their attempts to defeat the gravity of planet Kerbin and establish themselves among the stars. The sequel will offer numerous new parts, updated graphics and amazing new possibilities like interstellar travel or establishment of space colonies. Previously most of this was possible only through the works of modding community but once Kerbal Space Program 2 launches all these possibilities will be included in the official game release as well.
