Netflix is making huge strides towards becoming the go-to streaming platform for gamers. We’ve already written about their plans to host an E3 show in addition to developing The Witcher series. This week, we’ve received another gaming-related announcement – Netflix is working on a new animated TV series based on the iconic collectible card game Magic: The Gathering.

The project is being created by the animation studio Bardel Entertainment which is known for critically acclaimed Rick and Morty, and Teen Titans Go! series. Additionally, Magic: The Gathering series managed to on-board Anthony and Joe Russo as executive producers, who recently produced Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame movies.

As for the writers of the show – we have some known names on the list as well. Henry Gilroy (Star Wars: Rebels, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Jose Molina (The Tick, Agent Carter) will work as lead writers for the Magic: The Gathering series.

25-years of Magic: The Gathering in the card format produced a lot of lore and plot lines for the show writers to pursue. We might expect the show to focus on the Planeswalkers who have the ability to travel between worlds of Magic. Netflix says that the new show will feature various genre elements such as ‘suspenseful thriller, horror, and drama with deeply developed characters the likes of which are not often seen in animation’.

Not much else is known at this point, however, we truly believe that Netflix is capable of producing a truly engaging show. Even if it’s based on a game. Castlevania, Carmen Sandiego, and Minecraft: Story Mode have been great. We hope we will be able to say the same about The Witcher and Magic: The Gathering. Only time will tell…
