To everyone’s surprise, developer Psyonix announced a new special version of a popular arcade multiplayer game Rocket League. Rocket League Sideswipe is a new free-to-play game inspired by Psyonix car-football action that should be released for iOS and Android devices later this year.

Here’s an official trailer featuring its gameplay:

According to the developer, Rocket League Sideswipe will be a new standalone Rocket League experience that will share some similarities to the original version. However, the new game will be slightly smaller and more suited for mobile. Rocket League Sideswipe will feature smaller 1v1 and 2v2 matches in familiar Rocket League arenas. The matches will also be shorter – according to the development team, Rocket League Sideswipe games will be fast-paced, 2-minute matches that you can play with friends near or far thanks to online play.

As expected, the game’s controls will be overhauled to make it easier to play on a touch-screen. Rocket League Sideswipe will also feature different camera perspectives that should help you to keep track of your car and the ball.

In case you were wondering if the game will feature any kind of cross-play or cross-progression with PC or consoles, we have some bad news. Rocket League Sideswipe is a fully standalone game and will only share its name with the original.

For now, Psyonix didn’t reveal any release dates for the game. However, according to the information provided, the beta test should begin very soon and will kick off in various regions in a staggered fashion. Psyonix said that it hopes to release the game worldwide by the end of this year.
