Classic Game Gets Out of RPG Bed in FATE: Reawakened
It’s been 20 years since FATE first introduced the world to its brand of RPG action, but now it’s thrown off the dusty sheets and jumped out of bed, right into modern gamers’ arms. Developed by gamigo US Inc. and Tableflip Entertainment AB, and published by WildTangent, it’s the same game older players will remember but given a rejuvenating facelift.
FATE: Reawakened brings all four original titles together in one package on all major consoles and PC: the original (2005), and its sequels Undiscovered Realms (2008), The Traitor Soul (2009) and The Cursed King (2011).
“Play all four classic dungeon crawler titles with enhanced graphics as you battle through challenging procedurally generated dungeons, learn powerful spells, and fish to your heart’s content,” the developers said in a press release.
“The award-winning FATE series has gotten a modern facelift while remaining true to the nostalgic dungeon crawler classic.”
Neither Remake Nor Reboot
With tons of older classics getting the modern remake treatment, FATE: Reawakened is closer in execution to Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning than the recent Silent Hill 2, as it keeps all the same mechanics and gameplay. Purists who enjoyed the FATE series the first time around will find everything in its original place.
“We consider FATE: Reawakened to be a remaster since we are revamping the old graphics and UI as opposed to rebuilding the game from scratch,” the developer said on the game’s official website.
“For FATE: Reawakened, we are not fundamentally changing any gameplay significantly – we’re just giving it a nice new coat of paint so-to-speak.”
Classic ARPG Action
FATE garnered acclaim at the time for its dungeon crawling action, which followed on from the template set by the original Diablo, but introduced game mechanics, like procedurally generated dungeons and a choice of seven different animal companions, that are now seen in modern ARPGs like Torchlight III.
Aside from keeping all these features intact, the developers added modern graphic settings to FATE: Reawakened in Unity, such as higher poly counts, ambient occlusion and real-time directional lighting for a more immersive hack n slash experience.
