10 Best Female Protagonist Games in 2025: She’s the Main Character

Let’s be honest – female protagonist games hit differently. There’s something extra satisfying about diving into a game where I don’t have to imagine myself as a grizzled bearded dude with emotional baggage and a really big gun (no offense, Joel). Whether I’m outsmarting ancient death traps as Lara Croft, taking down robotic dinosaurs in Horizon Zero Dawn, or just trying to survive an apocalypse with style, these heroines bring grit, charm, and a whole lot of power to the table.

As a lifelong gamer, I’ve always kept an eye out for stories that reflect strong, complex women – bonus points if they’re wearing combat boots and dishing out witty one-liners. So if you’re tired of the same old brooding male savior archetype and ready to explore worlds led by fearless (and sometimes delightfully flawed) women, you’re in the right place.

Here’s my personal roundup of the best games with female protagonists – expect drama, danger, and a few moments that’ll make you say, “Same, girl. Same.”

Our Top Picks for Female Protagonist Games

If you’re looking for games that absolutely crush it in both gameplay and character depth, female protagonist games are where it’s at. These titles don’t just tick the box for representation – they rewrite the rules entirely. From razor-sharp storytelling to unforgettable heroines who bring grit, charm, and brains in equal measure, these games prove that saving the world (or wrecking it) doesn’t have a gender.

  1. The Last of Us Part II – Step into the fierce and emotionally charged journey of Ellie as she navigates love, loss, and revenge in a post-apocalyptic world.
  2. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – Take on the role of Kassandra, a legendary Spartan mercenary, as she uncovers ancient secrets and fights her way through war-torn Greece.
  3. Horizon Zero Dawn – Join Aloy, a skilled hunter and outcast, as she explores a world ruled by machines and unravels the mystery of her past.

We’re only getting started. There’s a whole universe of video games with female leads still waiting to blow your mind – filled with epic moments, tough choices, and characters you won’t forget anytime soon. Keep scrolling, it only gets better.

10 Best Female Protagonist Games Loved by Fans

Strong female characters have taken the spotlight in gaming over recent years, and honestly? About time.

Whether they’re slaying bad guys with a bow, unraveling supernatural mysteries, or stealthing their way through ancient empires, these heroines do a fantastic job of showing that grit, brains, and heart make the ultimate power combo.

Let’s just say this game emotionally destroyed me – in the best way possible. If you’re looking for a masterclass in gut-punch narrative and nerve-shredding stealth, this is it.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure game that builds on the legacy of The Last of Us Part I Remastered. You step back into the shoes of Ellie, older, tougher, and more haunted than ever. This time, it’s not just about survival. It’s about vengeance, grief, and finding yourself in a world where everything is falling apart… again.

Ellie’s story is what makes this game unforgettable. She’s strong, hurt, loyal, and layered like a show you binge-watch in one weekend. The game takes you through moments of love, anger, and deep loss, with characters who feel like real people. If you like story-driven games such as A Plague Tale or Horizon Zero Dawn, this will pull you in the same way, though it’s just as likely to break your heart.

When it comes to gameplay, The Last of Us Part II Remastered keeps you on edge. You’ll find yourself crafting Molotovs while running, sneaking past clickers while holding my breath (in the game and in real life), and fighting through some of the most intense battles you’ve ever played.

The stealth is smart. Enemies notice sound, movement, and even light. You can sneak through without hurting anyone or charge in with full force. Either way, the tension never lets up.

The remaster makes it even better. The graphics are sharper, the lighting looks real, and every animation flows so smoothly it feels like a movie. The sound design is incredible, too. Clicker screams give you chills, and the music adds emotion to even the quietest moments.

Pro tip

If you want to get through some of the hardest stealth sections, take your time. Move slowly, crouch often, and use bottles or bricks to lure enemies away from your path. Listen mode is your best friend. Keep an eye (and ear) on enemy movement before making your move. And if things go wrong? Don’t panic. Sometimes running is the smartest play.

Final verdict: If you want a game that will move you and keep you on the edge of your seat, The Last of Us Part II Remastered is a must-play. Ellie’s journey anchors the entire experience, making her one of the most memorable heroines in modern gaming.

The best game in the world. It’s a masterpiece, whether it’s story or gameplay.

The Last of Us Part II delivers a powerful narrative, stunning visuals, and deep character development. The gameplay and emotional moments are compelling and immersive. However, the ending falls short by failing to satisfyingly explain key plot points that the story builds curiosity around. This lack of closure slightly diminishes the overall experience. Still, it’s an unforgettable journey. 9/10.

I never thought wielding a spear in Ancient Greece would feel this empowering, but here I am, absolutely obsessed. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey stands out for its epic open-world exploration and rich RPG elements, making it a perfect example of an immersive, choice-driven adventure.

The game lets you choose between two siblings, but trust me, playing as Kassandra is the move. She’s clever, confident, and takes no nonsense, basically my role model with a sword.

This title blends action, exploration, and some of the best stealth game mechanics out there. You can charge into battle like a Spartan legend or quietly pick off guards and disappear like a ghost in the night (guess which I always try to do and fail gloriously).

The RPG system lets you upgrade gear, pick dialogue options, and even explore romance paths, which adds depth and replay value. Kassandra’s journey from mercenary to myth feels epic in every sense of the word. She crosses paths with legendary figures, makes impossible choices, and still cracks a joke in the heat of battle.

The world of Ancient Greece is breathtaking. The landscapes range from sunlit shores to snowy mountains, and the dynamic weather and day-night cycle make every mission feel alive.

Combat animations are smooth, and the sound design, from the clash of swords to the calls of wild animals, adds real immersion. While some quests can feel repetitive, the sheer scale of the map and variety of activities keeps the adventure fresh. It’s no wonder this is often considered the best Assassin’s Creed game.

Pro tip

If you want to fully enjoy Odyssey’s stealth and exploration, take time to explore side quests and hunt for hidden treasures. Upgrading your ship and choosing dialogue carefully can unlock unique story moments. Use stealth to scout enemy camps before engaging; it makes battles easier and more satisfying.

Final verdict: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a must-play for anyone who loves massive, living worlds, epic stories, and a mix of stealth and action. Playing as Kassandra makes the experience unforgettable, and the choices you make leave a lasting impact.

Stepping into Horizon Zero Dawn is like entering a world where nature reclaimed the Earth and machines rule the land. I started the game for the robot dinosaurs, but I stayed for Aloy, the brilliant, flame-haired outcast who made me want to sprint into the wilderness and challenge the world. This title is one of the best open world games I’ve ever played, with jaw-dropping landscapes, ancient secrets, and mechanical beasts that make your average dragon look like a house cat.

The game shines for its mix of thrilling combat and breathtaking exploration in a post-apocalyptic setting, making it a standout action-RPG. Combat is strategic and engaging. You can sneak up on machines with traps, use ranged weapons to exploit weaknesses, or charge in with brute force.

The game encourages experimentation, like combining elemental arrows and traps to take down bigger foes. Aloy’s journey is full of discovery, from climbing ancient ruins to interacting with tribal societies, giving the world a sense of life and depth.

The visuals are stunning, from lush forests to frozen landscapes, and the machine designs are imaginative and terrifying. Dynamic weather and day-night cycles add atmosphere, while the soundtrack perfectly complements the emotional beats of the story. Some side quests feel repetitive, but the main narrative and large variety of machines keep you hooked.

Pro tip

Focus on scanning machines and upgrading your equipment. Understanding enemy patterns is key for both stealthy and aggressive playstyles. Don’t rush through the story. Exploring the world rewards you with resources, hidden lore, and extra abilities.

Final verdict: Horizon Zero Dawn is a breathtaking open-world adventure with smart combat, a strong protagonist, and a world you’ll want to explore for hours. What makes it truly stand out is Aloy herself, a fearless, curious heroine whose journey gives the entire world its heart and purpose.

Let me tell you, stepping into Control as Jesse Faden is like being dropped into the weirdest fever dream, and loving every second of it. Control is a supernatural action game where reality feels unstable and every corner hides secrets.

This title blends telekinetic powers, unique storytelling, and intense combat into one immersive experience. As Jesse Faden, you gain powerful abilities and investigate a mysterious government building known as the Federal Bureau of Control.

The fighting mechanics are fast and creative. You can throw objects at enemies, dodge attacks with supernatural agility, or combine abilities for powerful combos. The gameplay is part third-person shooter, part psychic chaos, and all stylish.

The game also encourages exploration; hidden rooms, strange documents, and puzzles make the environment part of the gameplay. Jesse’s personal journey is gripping, revealing a story full of secrets, conspiracies, and shocking revelations.

Its cinematic visuals, with brutalist architecture, shifting corridors, and surreal environments, will constantly keep you on edge. Particle effects, lighting, and destruction physics add realism to Jesse’s powers, making every battle feel cinematic. Some players may find the story confusing at first, but it’s rewarding once you piece everything together.

Pro tip

Take your time exploring the building. Upgrading Jesse’s abilities early can make combat much easier, and scanning the environment for hidden documents gives both gameplay and story bonuses. Use your powers creatively to turn almost any object into a weapon.

Final verdict: Control is a unique, stylish, and thrilling action game that combines supernatural powers, mysterious storytelling, and exploration in a way that keeps players engaged from start to finish. Jesse Faden anchors the chaos with her sharp determination, making her one of the most memorable female protagonists in modern gaming.

Okay, imagine juggling high school drama, fighting monsters, and saving the world, all while trying to get good grades. Welcome to Persona 3 Portable.

This is an RPG where you live the life of a high school student by day and fight supernatural enemies called Shadows at night. It blends turn-based battles with a story about friendships, school life, and choices that shape your journey.

Like many Persona games, it masterfully blends daily life with the supernatural. You can summon Personas, magical beings that fight for you, while attending classes, hanging out with friends, and building relationships that matter in the game.

What makes Persona 3 Portable especially cool is the option to play as a female protagonist for the first time in the series. She brings new Social Links, unique dialogue, and alternate relationship paths that give the story fresh perspectives and emotional depth.

The game switches between dungeon exploration and daily life. Decisions you make in friendships and social interactions affect your Personas’ strength and unlock new story events. Playing as the heroine gives these interactions a different tone, adding replay value for longtime fans.

Battles can be challenging, but planning your attacks, exploiting enemy weaknesses, and using your team strategically makes combat rewarding. The mix of school routines, exams, and supernatural battles keeps the gameplay fresh.

The visuals are bright, colorful, and anime-inspired, while the soundtrack changes with each scene to match the mood, from tense fights to quiet moments at school. Some dungeons can feel long or repetitive, but the story, character interactions, and personal growth moments make it easy to stay invested.

Pro tip

Focus on building strong friendships and planning your time. Going to school, hanging out with friends, and fighting in dungeons all affect each other, so balance your day carefully to get the best results.

Final verdict: Persona 3Portable is a fun mix of school life and battles with magic. The story and friendships make it a game that sticks with you. The addition of the female protagonist makes this version especially memorable, offering new perspectives and giving players a chance to experience the journey in a more personal way.

The best game i’ve ever played. The story is really good, but some content from the PS2 version is not there (like a couple of anime cutscenes and a 3D environment). It’sreally nice to have that game on the go, but most modern phones are good enough to emulate a PS2.

Unique featuresDual protagonist narrative, psychological horror, intense atmosphere

Alan Wake 2 may have his name on the box, but FBI agent Saga Anderson steals the spotlight. She’s sharp, skeptical, and unshaken even as reality unravels around her. This psychological horror thriller blends gripping storytelling with tense survival mechanics, and Saga’s level-headed approach makes her a standout in a genre often filled with predictable characters.

Saga’s investigation starts with a small-town mystery and spirals into a nightmare of haunted forests, cursed manuscripts, and shadowy creatures that whisper threats in the dark. The survival horror gameplay is tense and rewarding; limited ammo, scarce resources, and clever puzzle-solving keep you on edge.

The “Mind Place,” a detective mode that lets you piece together clues, feels like stepping inside your own crime podcast. Every decision carries weight, making you think twice before rushing in.

Visually, Alan Wake 2 perfectly captures atmosphere. Moody lighting, fog-choked forests, and unnerving visual distortions sell the sense of being trapped in an unstable world. The flashlight combat isn’t just a gimmick. Watching darkness peel away from enemies is deeply satisfying. Combined with a haunting score that shifts from eerie silence to pounding tension, the game pulls you into Saga’s reality and refuses to let go.

Pro tip

Use light strategically in every fight. Keep moving and reload flares and flashlights whenever you can. Exploring every area carefully often reveals important clues and extra story content.

Final verdict: Alan Wake 2 delivers one of the strongest female leads in horror gaming, wrapped in a tense, beautifully crafted atmosphere. Saga’s calm determination in the face of chaos makes her journey unforgettable. For fans of story-rich survival horror, this is as good as it gets.

This game is so original, have never played anything like it. Im only 10h into the game but I just had to come here to help spread the word about this masterfully made game. Remedy gets better with every game they release. Cannot even imagine what 11/10 game they will come out with next.
Alpacalypse_
Horror games aren’t my favorite genre, and I don’t really get along with them, but I’m glad I made an exception for this game. Alan Wake 2 is ART in its purest form. This is a work that clearly shows its originality, has its own identity, and is not the result of Excel spreadsheets. The gameplay is not revolutionary, but it doesn’t interfere with the story and artistic aspects, although it doesn’t allow for the highest rating either. One of the best games I’ve played in recent years, and I would even go so far as to say one of the best works I’ve consumed, whether we’re talking about a book, a movie, or any other type of medium.

I didn’t think the Plague Tale series could get any more emotionally intense after Innocence – but Requiem proved me very wrong. A Plague Tale: Requiem takes everything Innocence did well and turns it up. You play as Amicia de Rune, a young girl with a crossbow, quick thinking, and a fierce love for her little brother Hugo. He’s still cursed, and their world is just as dangerous, only this time, the threats are bigger, faster, and even more terrifying.

The story is gripping and full of emotion. You move through medieval France, hiding from soldiers, avoiding rivers of rats, and making choices that weigh heavy on your heart.

Stealth and action blend smoothly, with more tools and ways to fight or sneak. The game feels tense and personal, with quiet moments that make the danger hit even harder.

Visually, it’s stunning. Sunlight spills across ruined villages, mist curls through fields, and every shadow feels alive. The sound design is just as strong; whispered voices, the scurry of rats, and haunting music that stays with you long after you stop playing. The mix of beauty and horror makes this world both immersive and unforgettable.

Pro tip

Move slowly, use shadows, and watch for clues in the environment. They often show safe paths or hidden items that help you survive.

Final verdict: A Plague Tale: Requiem is a game with a strong story and smart stealth. If you’re drawn to games where story and atmosphere matter as much as mechanics, this title will leave a mark you won’t forget. Guiding Amicia through her harrowing journey adds depth and heart, making her one of the most memorable heroines in modern gaming.

WOW! When this game first came out it was locked at 30FPS and it really dragged it down and I got half way through it and quit. I just got around to playing it again and now it is locked at 60FPS and if this game was released like this in the first place it would be an absolute masterpiece. Now in 2025 it still is a Absolute Masterpiece and to see this graphical marvel play and look like this is just incredible. Just played it from start to finish and what a fantstic story with real meaning. We need this type of game design back into the mainstream....I miss it. This is a must play!

Jill Valentine is everything I’d want to be in a crisis: smart, sarcastic, and ready to blast a zombie without smudging her eyeliner. Resident Evil 3 Remake earns its nomination for Survival Horror and Intense Action because it perfectly combines tense exploration, scarce resources, and nonstop heart-pounding moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat. From the moment you enter Raccoon City, the danger never stops, and Jill’s quick thinking and courage make every encounter thrilling.

The game blends tense exploration, limited ammo, and terrifying chase sequences (thanks, Nemesis) into a short but gripping adventure that easily earns its spot among the best survival games. You’ll constantly face tough choices (do you save your bullets for later or use them now to survive a sudden attack?). Every encounter feels urgent, and the pressure makes surviving all the more satisfying.

The pacing is fast, the combat is sharp, and the city itself feels alive with danger. Jill doesn’t just fight monsters; she outsmarts an apocalypse. Shadows, flickering lights, and eerie sounds create a suspenseful world where every corner could hide a threat. The game makes you feel both scared and empowered at the same time.

Pro tip

Move carefully and manage your resources wisely. Always keep an escape route in mind, and use your environment to slow down Nemesis whenever you can.

Final verdict: A thrilling mix of action, horror, and strategy, this game is perfect for anyone who wants a short but unforgettable survival experience. Jill’s story is exciting, the city is terrifying, and every moment feels meaningful.

Life is Strange hit me right in the feels, and then kept twisting the emotional knife (thanks, game). This fantastic title stands out for its powerful storytelling and emotional depth, making it one of the most engaging narrative-driven games out there. You step into the shoes of Max Caulfield, a photography student who discovers she can rewind time.

This ability isn’t just a gimmick. It’s central to the way you experience the game, allowing you to explore different outcomes and witness the far-reaching impact of your choices. For anyone who loves story-heavy games that put characters first, this is a must-play.

The gameplay focuses less on action and more on decisions, dialogue, and exploration. The pacing is slower, giving you time to absorb the small details in each scene, from the clutter of Max’s dorm room to the shifting expressions on characters’ faces.

There’s a strong sense of connection to the people and places you encounter, and the time-rewind mechanic makes every choice feel weighty. At times, the dialogue can feel a bit awkward, and the controls aren’t as smooth as in more action-focused games, but the emotional pay-off more than makes up for these shortcomings.

Visually, the game opts for a painterly, stylized look rather than ultra-realistic graphics. This fits perfectly with its dreamlike tone and teenage perspective. The soundtrack, a mix of soft indie tracks and atmospheric background music, is one of its strongest elements, adding to the mood of every scene. Moments like standing on a cliff at sunset or walking through a quiet hallway feel immersive and almost tangible. To learn more about the game and why it leaves such an emotional mark on the gamers, read this Life is Strange review.

Pro tip

Slow down and explore every corner, talking to everyone you meet – those small choices might change everything.

Final verdict: Life is Strange is a moving, heartfelt experience that leaves a lasting impression long after the credits roll. It’s not about fast reflexes or big explosions. It’s about the moments that make you stop, think, and feel. Experiencing it all through Max’s perspective makes the journey even more personal, cementing her as one of the most relatable heroines in gaming.

Unique featuresRebooted origin story, survival action gameplay, environmental puzzles

When Lara Croft rebooted her way into Tomb Raider (2013), I wasn’t ready for how grounded and powerful her origin story would be. Tomb Raider takes Lara Croft from a fearless icon to a young woman fighting for her life and earning her place as a legend.

Gone were the acrobatic dual-pistol days. In their place came grit, vulnerability, and a story that made you feel every struggle and triumph. This Lara is resourceful, determined, and human, which makes her rise into a true action heroine all the more powerful.

The gameplay blends exploration, climbing, stealth, puzzle-solving, and intense combat into one seamless adventure. You’ll scale dangerous cliffs, discover ancient ruins, craft weapons from whatever you can find, and face enemies that push you to adapt on the fly. There’s a constant sense of danger, which makes every moment feel high-stakes, though some quick-time events can pull you out of the immersion if you’re not a fan.

Visually, the game looks amazing and really pulls you into its world. The island feels alive, from rain-soaked cliffs and dim torch-lit caves to collapsing temples filled with ancient secrets. The lighting effects make every fire and shadow feel real, while the cinematic camera work keeps action sequences thrilling. The soundtrack builds tension in quiet moments and explodes during fights, perfectly matching Lara’s journey from fear to fearlessness.

Pro tip

Take the time to explore every side path. Hidden relics, journals, and upgrades not only make you stronger but also reveal more about Lara’s world and the island’s secrets, turning survival into discovery.

Final verdict: If you want an adventure that mixes survival, mystery, and the making of a hero, Tomb Raider delivers in spades. It’s a gripping, modern take on a classic that will keep you hooked from your first step onto the island until the credits roll. Lara’s transformation from vulnerable survivor to fearless adventurer is the heart of the experience, making her one of gaming’s most enduring heroines.
