Is Rocket League Cross Platform?

Is Rocket League cross-platform? Absolutely – and that’s one of the reasons the game remains so popular. Rocket League takes a simple idea and makes it endlessly fun: drive rocket-powered cars, chase a giant ball, and score goals. Over the years, I’ve played on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and even Nintendo Switch. This guide explains how crossplay and cross-progression work, what platforms support them, and how to keep your hard-earned items wherever you play.

Platform Availability

Rocket League is free to download on Windows through Steam or the Epic Games Store, on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, on Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S, and on Nintendo Switch. These console versions play together across generations. There is also a separate mobile spin-off called Rocket League Sideswipe for iOS and Android. Sideswipe has touch controls and quick matches, but does not connect with the main game, and progress from the mobile version cannot be transferred.

Legacy macOS and Linux copies still run, but they are restricted to offline play and cannot join online servers or use cross-play. If you still own one of these versions, you can use it for split-screen matches, but you will need a supported device to access the full online experience.

Cross Platform Play (Crossplay)

Cross-play allows players on different systems to join the same match and is enabled by default. When you queue for any online mode, you enter a shared pool across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. If you only want to match with players on your own system, you can turn cross-play off in the Gameplay settings, but queues will be longer. To team up with friends on other systems, open the Friends panel, search for their Epic name, and create a party.

Quick Chat messages show up for everyone, and voice chat can be turned on in the Chat settings, though parental controls may restrict it. For more ideas on games that unite players on different systems, you can explore our list of the best cross-platform games on Eneba Hub.

From my own sessions with friends on PC, Switch, and PlayStation, we found matches quickly, and the mix of play styles kept things fresh. Cross-play extends to private lobbies too; you can set a name and password for casual scrims or tournaments. I only disable cross-play when coaching a new player who wants to practise against similar skill levels, then turn it back on once they are comfortable.

Crossplay Support by Platform

The following table summarises which versions of Rocket League support cross-play. A “Yes” means you can match and party up with players on other systems; a “No” means you cannot connect across devices.

PlatformCrossplay Support
Windows (Steam and Epic)Yes
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5Yes
Xbox One and Xbox Series X and SYes
Nintendo SwitchYes
macOS and Linux (legacy clients)No (offline only)
iOS and Android (Sideswipe)Only between mobile devices

Because cross-play is integrated at the server level, there is no distinction between Steam and Epic players. PlayStation users will see Epic names for friends on PC and vice versa. Mac and Linux clients cannot join because online support ended, and Sideswipe is its own environment with its own cross-play between iOS and Android.

Platform Specific Limitations and Partial Compatibility

Even with robust cross-play, there are a few caveats:

  • Input differences. PC players can use a keyboard or a controller, while console players use controllers only. Matchmaking does not split by input, so plug in a gamepad on PC if you want better aerial control.
  • Chat and parental controls. Typed chat is visible only within the same platform, but Quick Chat phrases show for everyone. Voice chat works across devices if you enable it, though child accounts may have restrictions.
  • Platform-exclusive items. Cars like Sweet Tooth on PlayStation, Hogsticker and Armadillo on Xbox, and the Mario, Luigi, and Samus vehicles on Switch remain tied to their native system.

Mac, Linux, and Sideswipe clients cannot connect to the main game, and choosing different matchmaking regions from your friends can lead to higher latency. If you enjoy competitive play on Xbox, the cross-play option keeps queues healthy. Selecting the same server region reduces lag; if one of you chooses Europe and another North America, the matchmaker may pick randomly and raise ping. Sideswipe supports cross-play only between mobile devices and remains separate from the main game.

Cross Save and Cross Progression

Cross-save stores your level, rank, and Rocket Pass tier on your Epic account so you can continue on any linked system. Cross progression goes further by carrying most of your inventory. Both features rely on linking your console and PC accounts to one Epic account. Once linked, your progress follows you across devices.

Because your XP and Rocket Pass tiers are tied to your Epic account, you do not have to grind again when switching platforms. When I moved from PlayStation to PC, my Titanium White Octane, seasonal titles, and rank carried over instantly. This made the transition feel effortless and meant I could focus on improving rather than unlocking the same items twice. Keep in mind that syncing may take a few minutes the first time you log in.

Cross Save Support

Setting up cross-save is straightforward. Sign in or create an Epic account, link your console and PC profiles, choose a primary platform for your rank and Rocket Pass level, then start the game to sync your progress. Cross save works only on supported systems; Sideswipe and discontinued macOS and Linux clients cannot share data.

After linking, open the Garage on each platform to verify that your favourite cars, decals, and wheels are available. Seeing your custom loadouts appear on another system for the first time is satisfying and confirms that the process worked correctly.

Cross Progression Support

Cross-progression carries most of your inventory from one system to another. Shared items include common drops, season rewards, Rocket Pass unlocks, crafted items, and standard DLC. Item shop bundles travel with you, though currency balances stay on the platform where you bought them. A few things remain tied to their origin, such as platform-exclusive cars like Sweet Tooth and Hogsticker, and certain premium licensed packs. Trading was removed in 2023, so there is no risk of losing items when switching systems.

Shared items also include fan rewards from events and streams, so you will keep RLCS drops when you change systems.

Account Linking

Linking your accounts correctly ensures your progress travels with you. Use one Epic account and connect each console or PC profile to it, as each platform can only link to a single Epic account. Choose a primary platform for your rank and Rocket Pass level since you cannot merge progress from different profiles. Protect your account with two-factor authentication so that your cross-progression link remains secure.

If you unlink a console account, there may be a cooldown before you can link it again, so plan ahead before disconnecting a platform.

Developer and Publisher Comments and Future Plans

Psyonix rolled out full cross-play across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch in 2019 and added cross-platform parties soon after. The free-to-play update in 2020 brought cross-save and cross-progression powered by Epic accounts. Trading was removed in 2023 to cut down on fraud, and the team has continued to improve account security and voice chat. They have also hinted that more licensed DLC may become transferable in the future.

The developers regularly publish roadmaps on the official blog, offering a clear picture of upcoming features and showing how community feedback shapes the game’s direction.

Summary

Rocket League lets you play across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch with cross-play enabled by default. Inviting friends is easy through Epic friends, and your rank, Rocket Pass, and most items follow you thanks to cross-save and cross-progression. Some exclusives, licensed packs, and currency stay on their original platform, and Sideswipe is separate. To start playing, pick up a Rocket League key from our store, link your accounts, and jump into the arena with anyone.
