How to Beat Jevil: Deltarune’s Secret Boss Guide

If you have ever wondered how to beat Jevil in Deltarune, you’re not alone. This chaotic jester hides behind a sealed door in Chapter 1 and offers one of the toughest bullet‑hell encounters in the game.

I remember stumbling into his cell without preparation and getting wiped out in seconds. After many retries, I learned that beating this secret boss requires patience, planning, and a clear understanding of his mechanics.

This guide breaks down everything you need to know, from finding the hidden key pieces to choosing between the violent and pacifist routes. By the end, you’ll know how to beat Jevil and why the fight is worth the effort.

How to Beat Jevil: Locating and Unlocking the Fight

Jevil is locked behind a heavy door in the basement of Card Castle. To challenge him you must assemble a special key. This involves finding three broken key parts scattered throughout the world:

  • Field key piece: Speak to the mysterious shopkeeper in the Field area. He tells you about the jester and offers one piece of the broken key.
  • Forest key piece: Solve the clock puzzle in the Forest. When the hands are aligned correctly, a chest opens with the second piece inside.
  • Bake Sale key piece: Buy the third part from Seam’s shop after you reach the Bake Sale area. It costs a few Dark Dollars but is essential.

Once you have all three, return to Seam, who can forge the pieces into the Door Key. Bring the Door Key to the basement of Card Castle and interact with the cell door. Jevil will greet you with his manic laughter and ask if you want to play a game.

Accepting this challenge launches the battle. Preparing before you unlock the door is crucial because you won’t have time to shop once the fight begins.

Understanding Jevil’s Phases and Attack Patterns

Jevil’s fight is divided into five phases triggered by his health or how tired he is. He starts with 3,500 HP. When his HP drops to 80 percent (2,800) or his tiredness reaches two, he enters phase 2; at 60 percent (2,100) or tiredness 4, phase 3; and at 40 percent (1,400) or tiredness 6, phase 4. Phase 5 begins automatically after his final phase 4 attack. Each phase introduces new patterns while reusing earlier ones.

  • During phase 1 he teleports and fires volleys of spade bullets, launches spiraling rings of spades, drops bombs that explode into hearts, and swings scythes around the board. The patterns repeat in order the first time, then cycle randomly.
  • Phase 2 adds carousel attacks where rows of horses sweep across the screen, club bombs that split into spreading bullets, diamond rain that rushes upward, and faster spade spirals.
  • Phase 3 combines horses and ducks in a tighter carousel, spade bombs that explode in all directions, club barrages with three‑way spreads, and scythe attacks that include a larger red blade sliding horizontally.
  • Phase 4 speeds everything up. Jevil teleports and hurls single diamonds straight across the board, follows with a chaotic mix of heart, club, spade and diamond bombs, then moves into a slow diamond rain that rewards you with extra tension points for grazing. His “Final Chaos” attack fills the entire screen with falling Devilsknife blades; staying near the sides and moving cautiously keeps you alive.
  • Phase 5 mixes attacks from all previous phases at random. Surviving this barrage is challenging, so memorizing patterns and keeping calm is vital. Knowing the phases and what triggers them allows you to anticipate when the fight will intensify. That insight is key to understanding how to beat Jevil.

Preparing Your Party and Gear for the Jevil Fight

Before you unlock Jevil’s cell, stock your inventory with healing items. The Top Cake, Spin Cake and Clubs Sandwich restore large chunks of health and are worth saving for this fight. Darkburgers, Choco Diamonds and Hearts Donuts provide affordable healing for Kris, Susie and Ralsei. Revive Mints and Revive Dust are essential for bringing knocked‑out teammates back into the fight.

Equip your characters for balanced defense. Spread armor like the Amber Card and Iron Shackle across the party to avoid any one member becoming a glass cannon. Consider discarding Ralsei’s manual or the Glowshard if you need extra inventory slots. Ralsei’s Heal Prayer and Susie’s Rude Buster are lifesavers, so keep them alive.

Visibility matters too. Playing in full screen helps you track Jevil’s bullets more easily. If you’re not sure how to make Deltarune fill your monitor, our guide on how to fullscreen Deltarune walks through simple shortcuts and settings on PC and Switch. Better visibility reduces fatigue and improves reaction time during the fight.

Violent Route: Strategies to Defeat Jevil Through Combat

The straightforward way to beat Jevil is to attack until his HP hits zero. Kris and Susie should focus on fighting when the attack cycles give you room to breathe. Try to land perfect timing on their attack meters for maximum damage. Ralsei should defend or heal using Heal Prayer to keep everyone alive.

During bullet‑dense patterns, defending builds up tension points (TP) and grants brief invulnerability frames when you graze near bullets. Use that extra TP to cast Rude Buster, which deals heavy damage and reduces Jevil’s defense, or to keep Heal Prayer ready when hearts are low.

Watch for safe gaps in his patterns: in the spiral attack, stand between two spades; during the horse carousel, hug the bottom left corner; when bombs rain down, move in small circles away from clusters.

Pacifist Route: How to Pacify Jevil

If you prefer to spare your foes, you can pacify Jevil instead of defeating him by force. To do so, you must raise his tiredness level to nine. This is done through two special ACT options only Kris can use: Pirouette and Hypnosis. Pirouette costs 20 percent TP and increases tiredness by 0.5. Its secondary effect depends on the turn:

Turn Pirouette effect
2Lowers Jevil’s defense, making your attacks more effective
3Reduces the party’s invincibility frames for the turn
4Decreases Jevil’s attack power, reducing damage taken
6Heals a random party member
7Shuffles HP bars among the party; everyone returns to normal after the fight
8Increases Jevil’s attack for the turn, so use with caution
9Heals all party members

The cycle repeats after turn 9. Use Pirouette on positive or neutral turns to build tiredness gradually. Hypnosis consumes 50 percent TP and the entire party’s turn but raises tiredness by one point and weakens Jevil’s attacks for that round.

Alternate between defending to build TP and using Hypnosis when everyone is at safe health levels. When his tiredness reaches nine you can have Ralsei cast Pacify to end the fight immediately, even if his HP is still high.

Surviving Jevil’s Toughest Attacks

Some of Jevil’s moves can feel overwhelming, but each has a safe pattern:

  • Five‑Spade Attack: He teleports and sprays spade volleys. Move to the far left or right and stay between the spade lines. Don’t chase him; let the bullets pass before repositioning.
  • Spiral Attack: Large spades orbit toward the center. Stand between two spades near the edge of the board. The spiral direction can switch later, so be ready to adjust.
  • Horse and Duck Carousel: Rows of horses (and later ducks) sweep across. Stick to the bottom left corner and move slightly up or down to dodge their bobbing motion.
  • Suit Bombs: Bombs with hearts, clubs or diamonds fall and explode into bullets. Watch for the shape in the center of each bomb; hearts explode into four hearts, clubs into a three‑way spread, diamonds into lines. Keep moving and avoid clustering bullets by steering clear of other bombs.
  • Devilsknife Rain: During Final Chaos, massive blades fall from above. Stay near the sides and watch for the pattern: edges first, then center. There is a moment of calm before the largest blade drops. Use that pause to heal or defend.

Observing and memorizing these patterns reduces panic and builds confidence. If you enjoy studying attack rhythms, our guide on how to beat the Yellow Wind Sage in Black Myth: Wukong shows how reading a boss’s cues turns an impossible fight into a manageable challenge.

Rewards for Beating Jevil and Why It Matters

Why go through all this chaos? Beyond the satisfaction of conquering a formidable foe, beating Jevil grants unique rewards.

If you deplete his HP through the violent route, a chest appears containing the Devilsknife. This weapon is an axe for Susie that increases her attack and reduces the TP cost of her Rude Buster skill.

If you pacify him, the chest instead contains the Jevilstail, an armor piece that can be equipped by any party member. It provides a balanced boost to attack, defense and magic. Either item helps with later battles and carries over into Chapter 2 when you import your save.

The fight also teaches valuable lessons about bullet‑hell mechanics that apply to other games. Learning how to beat Jevil improves your reflexes and patience, making future secret bosses like Spamton NEO less intimidating. Finishing the fight also unlocks a cutscene that hints at deeper lore in Deltarune, rewarding lore‑hungry players.

Final Thoughts on the Jevil Battle

Jevil’s manic laughter and barrage of attacks can make his battle feel impossible at first. Yet with preparation, pattern recognition and a solid plan, the secret boss becomes a rewarding challenge instead of a brick wall.

Whether you choose to whittle down his HP or tire him out for a pacify finish, the key is to stay calm, manage your resources and take advantage of safe moments to heal or build TP. Equip your party wisely, stock up on healing items, and practice dodging his attack patterns until they become second nature.
