Without Doom video games, we would never have had Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Halo, Quake or Unreal Tournament among others. The original Doom was developed by id Software and released in 1993. Even though it was not the first FPS game ever made, it was definitely the most influential and altogether revolutionary for its time. Doom marked the guidelines for the FPS games that followed in its footsteps and defined the baseline mechanics of all contemporary first-person shooters. On top of that, it was an awesome game that mixed 3D graphics, fast-paced action, horror and a wide arsenal of badass weaponry. In the 1990s Doom video games convinced Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington that gaming is the future of entertainment, in turn paving the way for the emergence of Valve and the entire Steam platform.
