Few people expected the effect the Mass Effect trilogy would have on the RPG genre as a whole. Released on 20th of March, 2007, Mass Effect 1, the beloved creation of BioWare, introduced us to a rich universe, brimming with lore waiting to be discovered, a big cast of well-written characters with unique histories, morals & motivations, freedom to customize your gameplay, and a masterfully-crafted narrative that shifts according to your decisions. This little RPG experience gave birth to a whole trilogy that takes players to the farthest reaches of the universe in the hopes of saving humanity. Successfully spawning a fourth major instalment after the original storyline ended, spin-offs and even a remaster of the trilogy, these are the perfect games for everyone wanting to experience the best the RPG genre has to offer!

All major Mass Effect games

You’ll hardly find a gamer that hasn’t played at least one of the games from this franchise. It’s not surprising, since many laud the original Mass Effect trilogy as one of the greatest pieces of entertainment in gaming history. Thankfully, if you’re new to this series, everything is pretty straightforward, you just have to play everything in the right order:

  • Mass Effect
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda

Those who want a convenient experience, along with hardcore fans, are in for a treat because now they can immerse themselves into this pulse-pounding sci-fi story with 4K Ultra HD graphics with the release of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. Every single detail of the originals is packed into one launcher, and this Edition includes various quality of life improvements, fixes, updates, and much more.

The Mass Effect story

It all starts with a single man – the elite agent Commander Shepard, the only man in the whole universe capable enough to save humanity from complete annihilation. Thanks to rapid scientific advancement, we have charted the galaxies and found many great allies in various alien civilizations, but a threat unlike any other looms on the horizon for us all. Our protagonist, aided by their ever-increasing crew, is chasing a rogue Spectre who is leading an army of sentient machines in the hopes of conquering the galaxy. While travelling across the Milky Way, deepening the relationships with the companions and deciding how the story unfolds next, players soon discover that the sentient machines are but a ploy, under which an even bigger threat lurks. Every 50 thousand years, an artificial lifeform called Reapers eliminates every higher form of life – and they’re scouring the galaxy sooner than expected. The only one who can change it all is you!

What to expect?

Essentially, players are engaged in a race against time all the while having to juggle their relationships with the companions, trying to unify major civilizations for a single cause, travelling across the galaxy, and helping others. Every place you visit has rich lore, every bit of dialogue can reveal more about the characters and your surroundings, even a simple decision can greatly affect what happens in the latter Mass Effect games. You also get to customize your character, choose a skill set and change how the world views your unique Shepard. While Mass Effect: Andromeda does take place in a different galaxy and involves new characters, it follows this tested action RPG formula down to a T, adding an expansive open-world environment.
