The legendary Yakuza series

The Yakuza series is definitely worthy of both your time and attention! Also known by its Japanese name, Ryu ga Gotoku, this franchise is the well-beloved work of the famous video game company - Sega. While most players get instantly hooked on the fun and over-the-top beat ‘em up brawling mechanics, it’s not the only noteworthy aspect of the Yakuza games. Besides the dramatic storyline that connects almost all of the games, these titles offer a unique blend of action-adventure, action RPG, and open-world elements.

Apart from a few exceptions, players usually walk in the shoes of the protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, a reformed gangster that was once part of the fictional Kanto-based Tojo Clan. While he desperately wants to assimilate into civilian life and let go of his criminal roots, he can’t completely abandon his past life and often finds himself helping various Yakuza leaders. Needless to say, the Yakuza game series can be both mature and outright hilarious at just the right moments. So, if you’re interested in this franchise, this collection is just for you!

What is the correct Yakuza play order?

This game franchise has a lot of titles in the main series alone, and not all of the parts were released in chronological order, so it’s understandable if there’s a bit of confusion on where you should begin. Whether you get the Yakuza Remastered Collection or buy them separately, here’s the Yakuza games in order you should play them:

  • Yakuza 0
  • Yakuza Kiwami (which is the remake of the original Yakuza)
  • Yakuza Kiwami 2 (which is the remake of the original Yakuza 2)
  • Yakuza 3
  • Yakuza 4 Remastered
  • Yakuza 5 Remastered
  • Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon

A bit of everything for everyone

For those who like expansive narratives, the Yakuza game series boasts an interconnected story that features lots of recurring characters, intriguing personal stories and a well-balanced mix of dramatic and heartfelt moments. If you’re looking for a fun brawling experience, the battle mechanics are easy to learn and the big variety of fighting styles means that you’ll never get bored of fighting various goons for XP both in actual battles and random encounters.

Another aspect of the Yakuza Series that is almost universally praised is the side content, including sub-stories which usually complement the main storyline one way or another. Not only do you gain much-needed experience for increasing stats by doing side content, but you also get engaged in a huge list of activities that will have you managing Cabaret clubs, participating in Coliseum fights, playing virtual Sega games, singing karaoke, dancing, crafting gear and much more. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself playing the mini-games more than the actual main content!
