PlayStation consoles are a thing of legend in the world of gaming. The first gaming systems were released all the way back in 1994 in Japan and 1995 for the rest of the world. They were true pioneers in the world of gaming, as they were one of the first gaming platforms to use CDs and memory cards. Many things have changed since, but one thing remains the same – these consoles are still firmly at the top of the list when it comes to the best gaming consoles, with PlayStation 5 carrying the torch for the company since November of 2020.
Which PS console is right for you?
All Sony’s consoles still have a place in the world of gaming, even the initial ones released well over 25 years ago. We’ve had five generations of PlayStation consoles so far, each of them in many ways being better than the one before.
- PlayStation – released in 1994, discontinued in 2006;
- PlayStation 2 – released in 2000, discontinued in 2013;
- PlayStation 3 – released in 2006, discontinued in 2016;
- PlayStation 4 – released in 2013, still being sold;
- PlayStation 5 – released in 2020, current flagship console.
PlayStation & PlayStation 2
The initial PlayStation and PlayStation 2 are mostly still used solely because of their nostalgia value. Many gamers have had their start in gaming with these consoles and still come back to enjoy games that have turned into timeless classics such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, Gran Turismo 4, and many many more.
PlayStation 3
PlayStation 3 is sort of in a weird place right now. It definitely is not as old as the previous generations and has more to offer than just nostalgic value, however, it is not as modern or as capable as the newer systems. With games for the console being released all the way up to 2016 and with backward compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games, the PlayStation 3 is a great option for those looking to get gaming on a really tight budget.
PlayStation 4
PlayStation 4 might offer the best value for money for a gamer today. It is not the newest console by Sony anymore, which means that its value on the second-hand market isn’t as high. That being said, new games are still being released for the console and we should be seeing new games for PS4 for at least another year or two, meaning that you get to play and enjoy the most modern titles even with a previous-generation console. Loads of incredible titles have also accumulated over the 9 years that the console has been around, so even when new games are not being made anymore there will be loads of fun to be had with the PS4.
PlayStation 5
PlayStation 5 is the most modern console in the series of consoles today. It is by far the fastest and the most capable console, able to run games at 4K on 60fps all day long. There is no doubt that the PS5 will be the king of consoles for many years to come since it has just started its reign.
Is it worth buying a used PlayStation console?
Second-hand consoles might be the best value you can get. Each of the PS consoles can still provide loads of fun that can be bought at a very reasonable price. PS1, 2, and 3 can be picked up very cheap right now even in great condition. PlayStation 4 consoles are also very affordable within the second-hand market and you will even see one or two PS5s popping up cheaper than what they cost new. If you want to get one of the older consoles, buying them new isn’t really an option as they are not made anymore, so getting them used is often your only alternative. However, even with PS4 and PS5, which are still being sold new, there are plenty of reasons to explore the used-goods markets. Sure, you can buy a brand new console if you feel like that is what you need, however, you can save yourself quite a bit of money if you do decide to take the console over from someone that has already had their fun.
