This was bound to happen someday. Yesterday, Microsoft finally ditched one of the most annoying requirements on Xbox that was forcing console owners to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold if they wished to play popular free-to-play multiplayer titles online. No more! From now on, all free-to-play multiplayer games such as Call of Duty: Warzone, Apex Legends, Rocket League, and more are accessible without any additional Xbox subscriptions.
Plans for this change were first announced back in January when Microsoft found themselves under fire from the community when the company decided to raise the prices for Xbox Live Gold subscriptions. The company quickly changed their minds and in order to put Xbox fans at ease, promised a bunch of additional stuff, including no Xbox Live Gold requirements to play certain free-to-play games online.
Today is the day, and these promises are now fulfilled. Xbox Live Gold team shared a new blog post detailing the change and listing all the affected games:
“As part of listening to your feedback, this change will take place starting today, and all Xbox players will be able to access online multiplayer at no charge for a library of over 50 free-to-play games that support online multiplayer.”
The list of games includes a bunch of popular and lesser-known titles. In this list, you can find names like Brawlhalla, Crackdown, Dauntless, Destiny 2, Fortnite, Hyper Scape, Path of Exile, ROBLOX, World of Tanks, and many more other famous titles. Some of you might be wondering, so what’s the point of having an active Xbox Live Gold subscription now. We have to note that it’s still required for other premium online games, additionally, with Xbox Live Gold you can access certain Xbox Store discounts and snag a new collection of free games each month. So, if you’re not a fan of free-to-play online games, maintaining Xbox Live Gold is still useful.
