What is The Outer Worlds?

The Outer Worlds is an upcoming single-player based sci-fi role-playing adventure designed for the first-person perspective. A bit along the lines of Mass Effect, but with an undeniable tonal influence of Fallout series; perhaps because the people who previously worked on the older Fallout games, notably New Vegas, came back with the bang and put their best efforts in The Outer Worlds release.

This RPG will feature almost complete freedom of choice – the players will have tremendous freedom to shape their story. After starting as a humble castaway passenger, you will fight against the corporate baddies and their devious plan. Become the hero you think the remote space colony needs… and if you want to go and murder everyone in sight, it’s not like there’s space police to stop you! (Or is there? Secure yourself a copy of the game and find out!)

The sci-fi genre is appreciated and clearly loved by gamers, as the past franchises have proven. The Outer Worlds release seems to take advantage of such popularity, going the same path many great series have taken. Being in space gives you the freedom to act out your unrealistic plans and goals, but also keeps it all as a semi-grounded adventure that serves as a breath of fresh air. In this one, you will have companions, cool spaceship, witty banters, liberty of progression, bad guys – this time in space! – and hostile local fauna.

Is The Outer Worlds open world?

It depends on what you consider to be an open world. Once the Outer Worlds release hits the scene, there will be open and explorable spaces, but they will mostly be segmented. The developers wanted to make this game into a more story-driven experience, somewhat similar to Borderlands, so you will travel from one locale to another and will be let loose there, but it’s no Skyrim (if that’s what you are expecting). Explore Halcyon colony, use your spaceship to discover new places and while you will not be able to go to every direction from the get-go, there will be plenty to investigate in this space adventure!

Who is making The Outer Worlds?

The Outer Worlds release is anticipated not only for all the engagement and gratification it promises to bring. It’s unofficially named as a spiritual successor to Fallout: New Vegas because of the people behind some of the more prominent Fallout games. To directly point them out, lead directors of The Outer Worlds are Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky. These men are responsible for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines and the aforementioned Fallout, and that basically cements the expectation that hangs over their new project. The directors are currently working with Obsidian Entertainment, which is the developer of quite popular Pillars of Eternity series, so the Outer Worlds release already has a running start. With such backing and talent behind it, the game is bound to make an impact.

Will The Outer Worlds have character creation?

Yes, you will be able to create your own space adventurer! However… you will not be able to see him or her. Allow us to explain: at the start of the game you will be able to make your avatar character and customize it to a degree. But, since the whole game is from the first-person perspective, you will not be able to see the character in-game as you run and explore and battle. Additionally, after the Outer Worlds release, you will also have to deal with a silent protagonist (do not worry, the NPCs have fully-fledged dialogues, tons of them!).

These things might seem like a setback in terms of modern games, but that’s where the Outer Worlds take a step in another direction. In this game, character creation turns towards the inner side rather than outwards. You will have six skills to pick from, and each will influence how you interact with the world. You will also have combat abilities to use against your enemies. But the most important element is the flaw system!

Once the Outer Worlds release hits the market, you will be faced with a new form of reactionary gameplay – the game will track your experience and determine, how well you deal with things. If you fail at something for long periods or just hard enough, you will be given a flaw associated with the activity; so, if you struggle with certain enemies, you will develop a phobia for them. In exchange, when you get a flaw you will also receive a perk to compensate for the bad. Keep all this in mind when building your space-liberator’s career!

Does The Outer Worlds have multiplayer?

No, the Outer Worlds release will not have any multiplayer. The game was specifically designed for the single-player experience. One of the lead directors pointed out, that single-player games have more focus on the story and depth, which is what the team focused on as well. Therefore, in this game, you will truly be the only liberator, the singular avenger – the one and only hero! And while playing with friends in the space setting would be neat, there’s something undeniably attractive about knowing that you alone are the great and venerated (or feared) protagonist running between settlements.

Yet, sometime after the Outer Worlds release, things might change. We already know that games often migrate between platforms and get plenty of additions in form of DLCs and expansions, so while there will be no multiplayer with the official start, you never know what might be added later on. So, keep an eye out for that and by what we’ve gathered, there will be plenty of solo content to sink your time in.

When will The Outer Worlds come out?

The Outer Worlds will hit the stores on October 25, 2019. Therefore, you still have enough time to secure your copy of the game and prepare to travel to the edge of the galaxy. Initially, the Outer Worlds release is tailored for PS4, Xbox One and PC with Epic launcher. Afterward, it will appear on Steam, that is once the exclusivity deal will run out. And then there’s also the yet-to-be-confirmed date for Nintendo Switch. This is one of those games that you will be able to play in a way most comfortable for you.
