Ndemic Creations, the developers of Plague Inc, announced that the team is now working on a new and free mode for the game where you’ll be able to fight viruses and not just spread them. Not only that! The team behind the game made a quarter of a million dollars donation split between the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund. Not bad for an indie company, don’t you think.

In a special press release James Vaughan, the creator of Plague Inc said this:

“Eight years ago, I never imagined the real world would come to resemble a game of Plague Inc. or that so many players would be using Plague Inc. to help them get through an actual pandemic. We are proud to be able to help support the vital work of the WHO and CEPI as they work towards finding a vaccine for COVID-19”.

In case you never heard of it before, Plague Inc. is a game where you create and customize your own virus in order to infect the whole world in the shortest amount of time possible. Or it used to be… According to the same press release the game will soon get a game mode which lets players save the world from a deadly disease outbreak.

The announcement states:

“Players will have to balance managing disease progression and boosting healthcare systems as well as controlling real-world actions such as triaging, quarantining, social distancing and closing of public services. We are developing this game mode with the help of experts from the World Health Organisation, the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network and more.”

According to the news, the update will be free for everyone who already owns Plague Inc. However, it’s not clear when we’re getting the update, so this might take at least a couple of months to become a reality.
